My First Aquarium and DIY Skimmer

Thanks for the information, both little_fish and Kelz88. I don't think I'll be going back there unless I have no other option.

I believe the fish was damaged. I did see them feeding in the display tank along with the other fish and he seemed fine. Of course I am no expert on the behavior of a fire fish:)

If i was american i would buy from them in a heartbeat.

Those guys are rarely wrong. I used them for a quick reference when picking my fish. With the compatability chart, make sure you read up on the actual fish you want. Their little info window give extra important info (ie if they are shrimp eaters, or coral pickers)

:whoopee!:Good because I have been reading a awful lot from their site. Basically if I am interested in a fish, like the fire fish, I go there first to gather starter information. I guess to ship to Canada is expensive due to tax?

Nope they just wont ship. I figure it just cost them too much, and perhaps there is a few things that they have that canada doesnt allow. Not sure exactly why, but its a bummer.

Yet every day i torture myself by looking at the divers den. :D

Last night while at the boycotted LSF, the lady there kept telling me my tank was not ready for nearly every fish she sold. I finally asked her what fish I could put in the tank and she said not many, maybe a damsel. I told her my cycle was over and my water readings were great. She said my tank isn't established. What exactly is a established tank? I understand not rushing and buying 20 fish all at once but everything I have read says add 1 every week or two once cycle is confirmed complete. Am I missing something or was this lady just depressing for me no reason...lol:)

To return to another subject a couple of posts back, the snail is DESTROYING the algae. Maybe I have a mutated form of Green Hair Algae...lol. What ever it is, the crabs and the snails are going to town on it:) At the rate the snail is eating, I'm gonna have to start feeding him seaweed in about 2 weeks:)

Im not sure what she wanted, but you can add a new fish every 2 or 3 weeks. Its things like SPS corals, clams, nems and certain types of fish that need well established, mature (ie set up for several months) tanks to do well.

Hmm, I don't know if my lighting is appropriate. I have a standard lighting hood that came with the tank. It's got two bulbs. Do those require lighting like a coral? I am saving for a good light setup. If they don't require the ton of light then I'm all for getting some:)

Sweet. I'll see what the other LFS has and also take a good look at my lights tonight. When it says low to moderate light - is that the intensity or the time they are exposed? I assume it's the type or the intensity of the light.

Quick question:
Should I vacume out the snail droppings?

Not so quick question:
Is there something I can or should add to my tank to make my live rock even more alive? Like small creatures and what ever? Other than things growing on my rocks like the algae and fuzz, I don't have a lot of small things like plankton and whatever. What about small inverts?

I leave them, and just give it time for the live rock. Those creatures will populate the tank eventually :)

Remember, nothing good ever happens fast or cheap in this hobby!

Yes, that is my motto now. I am going to make a sign and hang it over my tank...lol:frustrat:
What do you think of the mushroom I bought. He is doing well, ....I think. He's not crunching up anyways:) The fish store guy who showed him to me showed me a example of one he had was quarantined because it was not doing well and it was crunched up like it was hurting. He said this would be a good sign of it not doing well.
By the way, the fish store I went to last night was incredible. I spent nearly two hours just looking at their clean and well cared for tanks. Their staff was great also, spending a lot of time helping me and blunt but positive answers when I asked a rookie question.
Also, he showed me the T5 HO lighting system and what they were made of. I am so going to build and wire my own. Those things are simple. All I'll buy premade is a timer / controller.

Honestly, unless something is wrong I never watch videos, i prefer pictures. But mushrooms are nearly impossible to kill, and they can squish up when they are expose to a whole lot more light than they are used to. So expect that when you upgrade and dont worry about it. If they are melting away, then you have issues.

I am so glad you found a new LFS that sounds like they are on much better track!
