d2mini's REAL 130g Rimless Cube Build Thread

Woah, thanks guys!

Parrot, it's a combination of the kit that came with it and the Sunlight Supply hanging kit. The sunlight one came with the white caps and polished knob at the ceiling and I used the long straight wires from that kit too. The triangle shaped wires are from the included kit. The included kit would have required hooks at the ceiling and came with straight wires with a loop at the end to hang from the hooks. I liked the sunlight supply solution better.

Biff, it's a 250w HQI and 4x24w T5's.

Wonton, that pipe you see in the tank is a dry pipe for wiring for my lights and vortechs. Once the overflow is in, I'll be sending the wires down there into the stand below. But I need to disconnect them from inside the light which will take some finesse. I can't fit the actual plugs down the 1" pvc.

BJ, you are correct... my attic space is almost non-existent. Makes wiring projects extremely difficult.

Do you think that's going to be enough light for that cube? I think I would have gone with a 450 watt pendant myself.

Oh, and about the wires, you are going to make them invisible right? Dcan is going to come over and help out, because he's the expert on invisible tanks? ;)

Off topic question: Did you have your recessed lighting put in after you bought the house, or was it in there already? In my house I have a very small space between the ceiling and the roof (less than 6 inches) and want to do recessed lighting, but don't know if it's possible with the way this house is built.

Ya, the tank is only 24" deep and it's going to be a mixed reef. I plan on having some sps on top and then lower light stuff at the bottom and towards the outside of the tank.

We had that recessed lighting put in during the big remodel of '06. They are the smaller cans that are more commonly used today rather than the old school big cans. They have a lower profile. I think some need a certain amount of space for heat reasons too so make sure you check that too, not just the physical size of the can.

My custom acrylic sump was just hand delivered by Kyle from Sapphire Aquatics so now I need to do the plumbing. He's installing the overflow in the tank tomorrow night I think.
I have a 32 gallon trash can in the garage full of saltwater ready to go in but it will probably have to wait till end of the week. And then i need to mix up about 4 more of those! I can do about one a day. I should have it filled and running in just enough time for me to leave for Europe. :)

Lookin good! I bet you are supper excited.. :D You can probably figure out how to get the wire to your light in the ceiling.

Thanks winy.
I could but then the room lights would be on when the tank lights are on. And I wouldn't be able to hook them up to my reefkeeper controller.
It's ok though because the light wires are going to go down the dry pipe in the overflow which will probably look cleaner than seeing them go all the way up to the ceiling. :)

And yes, very excited! :D

ok, let's see.... made a little more progress tonite.

My custom sump from Sapphire Aquatics is in.
I was able to plumb the two 1" drain lines, "Herbie" style. One is 100% drain with a standpipe fully submerged under water in the overflow with a gate valve to control flow. The second is a 1" emergency drain in case the first starts to clog. It's a really tight fit between the tank bulkheads and the sump bulkheads so I used a combo of hard pvc and flex pvc.

I also removed my recently acquired BRS dual chamber reactor that runs GFO and Carbon from my old tank and got it installed inside the new stand. Just need to decide on a final resting spot inside the skimmer chamber for the pump that drives it.

Tomorrow I will continue with plumbing the return.
