Thats my problem, but im getting such good deals on the tank and sump that im almost ready to set it up. Gotta fit the 55 gallon into my civic coupe two door. lol But ive just got my salt and test stuff, so I MIGHT go for an RODI system and the lights soon. I like patients too, with anything really. Get some pics for everyone as soon as you get the plumbing done and the water in there!

Okay, here are the latest pics. Today Neal and I started "The Great Tankventure". EagleEyes (Brendan) also came over for a while and watched me boss Neal around :D.

Before we did anything, I gave the new tank a nice, big final rinse. NWKRC!!

All the live rock was moved into a couple of bins.

Then Neal went fishing. And caught all the fish and shrimp and (non-hermit) crabs in about 15 minutes! Go Neal! He must be taking lessons from Yote.

Smoothie time! Then I drained the 55 with my Python. Thank god for the Python. If you don't have one, get one!

Then, Neal and I sorted through all the crushed coral substrate that was in the 55 by hand and rescued any bristleworms, crabs and snails that we could find. That took a long time. But my bleeding vegetarian heart couldn't let anything die unnecessarily.

The kitchen became a construction zone.

Once the 55 was cleaned out, we siliconed in the baffles, as it is to become the new sump.

090107016.jpg

I cleaned out my old 20 gallon fuge and sump. Mmmm algae!

090107019.jpg

We had to drop the 55 gallon tank down through the 240's stand. So Neal rigged up some sawhorses behind the 240's stand.

Sump is in!

Then we pushed everything back to the wall.

Added sand.

090107024.jpg

Filled it up about 2/3 with water, which was at a chilly 69 degrees. Running the lights and heater to (hopefully) get it up to a good temperature tonight so I can add the rest of the water, live rock and animals.

And Neal brought this nice base rock home from work. His boss used to have a tank and didn't need it anymore.

That's it for now! The updates will continue as the Tankventure does!

It looks soooo good in person. Yeah i got to see neil in action! He gets credit from me for doing all this, even though it isnt his tank, and even though i couldnt help you guys out with the PVC plumbing. lolGlad you figured it out!

Gahh i keep forgeting im not a doctor! Patience, not patients, is key! lol

Looks like your making progress. Got a question. In the pic where your turning the 55 into the sump. How did you do it? Also is there enough room for your skimmer to fit between the tank and stand?

Piggy, I cleaned out my 55 and had plexiglass cut to fit the inside of the tank, but about 8 inches below the top of the tank. Then I...okay Neal...siliconed in the plexiglass dividers to make 3 sections of the sump. One for equipment, one for a refugium, and one for the return pump. It took about 20 minutes. It's that easy to build your own sump.

Oh, and no, there isn't enough room for my skimmer to hang on the side of the sump, there is only about 6 inches of clearance between the sump and the tank. I am going to set my HOB skimmer inside the sump (it fits that way) and buy an in-sump skimmer when I get the money for it.

Thats good that you and Neal,ahem!... worked so hard on getting everything together.

Are you going to be able to get in and out of that sump?It looks pretty tall.I too,was originally going to use my 75g. but it was to tall.

Thanks to you and Reef I got it. Another question. Hope you don't mind. So does the waterline in the sump go above the plexiglass to fill all three compartments?

Yep. That's why I put the plexiglass dividers about 8 inches below the top of the tank. The water goes in one section, flows over the divider into the next, and flows over the divider into the third. You want to leave some space in the top of your sump in case your power goes out. Water will keep flowing through the overflow until the water level is lower than your overflow, so you need to leave enough space in the sump to catch that extra water. For my tank, I didn't measure, but I'm guessing 8 inches should do it. I guess I'll find out during our next big storm... :D

Looking good

On your Sump I can't tell from the pictures is your baffels the three pieces of plexi per section with the middle piece raised a little ? ( ie, as a bubble trap )

My 15 gallon has 3 total baffles to make Two seperate chambers My plan now is to have the 15 as 1/4 water enterance area 3/4 Fuge Drill two holes to make an ( Bulk headed overflow) if that makes sence, into a 10 gallon tank with all the return stuff.
