Putter's first tank

Doesn't look like any sort of algae I've ever seen... I'd also go with some sort of coral. If that's the case, you scored BIG time, that's awesome looking.

Well, back at home once again, and while in the big city (lol) I went to the only LFS there, and no stock, well the stock came in while I was there but with some ich so they had them all in hospital tanks treating the entire shipment :( so no fishes for me yet. I did however pick up a couple open brain corals...not sure if that was a smart idea or not...but was about the only chance I had to impulse buy so I took it! Here are a couple pics.

From what I could find to read it sounds like they like to be in the sand and at low to moderate flow, also low to mod light...hope that is the correct info. I may also give em a day or two and then move them to a spot that offers a little more room for growth.

it looks like the coral in the first pic has been chewed to hell. All I can see if the what looks like the skeleton and a blob of meat in the center. Did a trigger or butterflyfish get a hold of that or are my eyes playing tricks on me? the second pic looks great though!

The first looks like its near death. The skeleton exposed like that isn't good and I see very little flesh.I would feed both of them some krill or mysis about every three days til they fatten up.Do it when the lights are out and the feeder tenticles are exposed.

ok I will indeed start feeding, and the light one has some of the skeleton exposed but not alot, but it does have alot of er...flesh...I think, will try to get another pic or 2 from different angles and keep a close eye on the little one...sure hope I didn't buy a near dead one :( They do come in a tan color as well right? One more thing...the green...button looking pics above....could that be the start to a moonstone brain? Oh and for feeding...just use a baster or some such thing with water and food mix and squirt near the corals? Doc I have no idea what may have chewed on it, if anything, there were a few wrasse in the tank with them but that was all. Just been shipped as well to the FS day before I bought them...maybe stress from shipping?

I highly doubt the one in the first pic will survive.I've brought a few home several from my LFS that looked bad.All of em expired.
The second pic looks fairly healthy.
Good luck with em.

depending on the wrasse, they may have nibbled on it. show us a different angle pick of that coral. I am interested in taking a better look at it

-Doc

Not sure if these will help, not so much of a different angle but maybe a bit closer and clearer. Think the only way to get any kind of different angle would be to move the coral.

When the lights are out and the feeder tentacles are exposed-feed it mysis through a turkey baster and with the pumps off.I mentioned every three days earlier, maybe once every other day til it becomes nice and fleshy.

The second pics makes it appear better than the first one showed. Its lost the green from incorrect lighting or lack of light. It should have a lot more green and some brown in its tissue.Slowly adjust it to your lighting.Try a little shade near a cove and more it out in the open after a week or so.

in all honesty, I would take it back to the LFS. they should have a return policy for at least half of your money back. I would not want to take the risk of it dying

-Doc

How bad will it be for the tank if it dies? The LFS is 4 hours away so taking it back is not going to happen. What should I be watching for, is there a way to tell when it is well beyond the point of no return, do you think there may be a chance it will survive? The LFS had them on the rocks when I purchased them so it is eviendent that they do not have much more of a clue to this than I do and I will NEVER shop there again for anything! My one impulse buy and look what it got me, well at least purchasing every thing online I have to take the time to research it a bit before I buy it. If you think it wise to remove this one from the tank before it does damage then I will act on your advice and remove it, I certainly to not want to harm the enviroment for the other critters that are going into or that are already present there.

Nice buy. I would not have a problem in working with the light colored brain. Im not familiar with your system though, if it is well seasoned you might be able to enjoy it. just make sure you do not additiionally damage it. watch it to see if it fills with water. do not try and feed it if it is withdrawn. i do agree with the mysis initially but be careful on how much you feed. The open brains need light, so if you have them where they can get direct light you are fine. good luck and keep us posted.

Sorry didn't see reef's post before I replied to doc's. I will move it tomorrow and feed it every other day with the pumps off and see if it will come around, what time frame do I have to work with? Will a week or so be enough to give a good indication which way it will go? Jhnrb, my system is very new, these 2 coral are the only things in it now, it was filled with rock, sand and water on Dec 17 and went through a quick cycle.

if the flesh is white it may need more shade. LPS corals should not have white tissue in them, that shows that their X.... algae (i can't spell that long word) is dead. at that point, they need total shade to keep from dying. during that time, the algae may return to normal and the color will return, or it will die. you will know things are going bad if the "meat" keeps retracting into the skeleton and no feeding tenticles are present. Give it a few days and see what happens. sometimes they come back.

your system is fairly new for the brains as your food chain has not yet developed and you are running a somewhat sterile environment. good luck and keep us posted on your progress. you might try docs advice, nothing to loose. what you want to look for is if the animals fill with water and expand. if they do then you will be able to feed. it may take more than a few days but if tissue recedes from the edge or in the middle your chances of success are greatly dimenished . good luck.
