I have also vacationed and left prepared fish food in a freshwater solution in frozen ice cube trays. One cube per day of feeding. That way they cant overfeed. And I hide all the other fish food...

Yes, hiding the rest of the food is a must! Especially if you have pellets or flakes sitting around! People that aren't familiar with reef tanks have a tendency to feel sorry for the 'poor starving' fish and dump tons of food in!
