Hannah, I love Boykin Spaniels and haven't been able to find a breeder in the NY/PA/OH region...any info for me?

I don't know of any good breeder in that area, not to say that aren't there but we (sadly) have been coming across lots of new issues in the breed. We just found out that the breed is predisposed to exercise induced collapse (EIC). It probably comes from the lab heritage in the breed and due to extremely poor breeding practices of a few kennels and other back yard breeders it is becoming an issue. We are currently in the process of testing all of our dogs to find out if any of them are carries. They also have to be checked for luxating patellas and hip issues Also sadly the parent club has turned into a gigantic name calling, glory hogging aholes so a lot of good breeders and people are leaving the sport. Im lucky to be separated from it by distance and its the dogs ive breed that are winning out in the show world, plus i have a lot of happy costumers (both pet and hunting homes) that provide support. If you are looking for a dog right now I know of some amazing people that are quitting boykins because of the drama and have two girls and boy that they are looking for homes for. The are down in Georgia i think . . . or if you want a puppy im planning a litter for next fall. Check out my website for more info or pm any other questions you might have. I just beg you to buy with caution, this is such a wonderful breed but it has fallen into the hands of people who have lost sight of the bigger pictures.

I have VERY limited experience with them, my cousin, in South Carolina, neighbors have a male and ever since meeting the dog I have been looking for a breeder in this area. john marks dog is supposed to be in direct lineage with Whitaker Boykin dogs. Which makes sense, its right in the same area and he comes from an old south well off family with serious hunting hobbies. BUT I don't want to travel to SC to get one.

Well, technically they all have direct linage to the original boykin. But I think you are going to have to travel anyways because there aren't many boykins outside of the south. But it is really easy to fly puppies, you can ship them cargo or if you want to fly with them, you get a dog ticket, which is also cheep, and you bring them on as carryon. Ive never heard of them crying on the plane, they just get lulled to sleep by the engine noise. And you just potty them on a piddle pad in the bathroom. Quite simple really. There is a possibility there might be a lady in Maryland (I think) who might still be breeding her boykins but i think she has moved onto english cockers. Ill give it a looking into

Here are some pictures of my dogs so everyone can educate themselves to what a boykin spaniel is ; ) or maybe it's just and excuse to share my favorite poochies!
