Fluval 206 filter

I have a fluval 206 filter. This is considered as a canister filter right? I some other threads I read that these filters contribute to nitrates. Is this correct? Because this might explain why my nitrates are so high. Is this a possibility? Do I even need a filter?

I would ditch the canister. I saw major improvements in my water quality when I removed mine. No filter in necessary if you are doing enough water changes. However a protein skimmer will help. Your main source of filtration should be live rock the ideal point to aim for is 1-2 lbs a gallon.

Cannister filters are sold for use in Freshwater Aquariums.

+1 kevdogg, live rock and protein skimmer are your filtration for Saltwater.

They sell them because you have to replace all the little elements to it, making a 100 dollar purchase eventually become considerably higher.
