DIY "Pod Condos"

Erin will fix this fully when she has all the photos until then. Enjoy.

I figured that since I hadn't found one on this site (there are multiple ones on different forums) that I would make one for us while I made mine. I figure with all the talk about Mandarins going on as well, that these would be helpful in keeping stable pod populations and also to allow our members to simply search or look on here rather than elsewhere.

What is required:

1x 20' roll of Gutterguard (only size it comes in to my knowledge)
1x 30pk (or whatever you choose) cable/zip ties
~2-3 pds of LR Rubble (plan for 1pd per condo roughly)

Optional:

- Command Hooks (preferably the 2pd kind but the .5pd seems to work find as well)
- Some form of hanging line (fishing works well, or you can use braided stainless steel [which will not corrode])

Now to make the condo we need to first cut the GG into sections, I used 1' sections that fit my needs but you could use whatever length you feel comfortable with. NOTE: The longer the section the bigger the diameter of the condo, all condos using the GG will be 6 inches tall. Keep in mind, I probably wouldnt use anything bigger than 16" sections to avoid having large diameter condos.

Next we will roll the GG on to itself and make cylinders. Connect the two ends using the zip ties. (Iused 2 ties equally spaced to hold the fixture together)

- Now we will cut end caps out of the GG. Use square pieces that are big enough to fit the ends with some overlap (Don't worry! We will trim these down to look nicer after we attach them.)
- Now secure just 1 end cap using 4 zip ties spaced equally (a + pattern)
-Now just add your rock rubble and secure the other end cap the same way you secured the first one!

Viola! A safe place for your pods to reproduce and keep your tank stocked!

NOTE: Optionally you cane secure fish lines to one end to quickly pull them from the tank without getting messy. This would be for 2 reasons 1) you want to move them from dt to sump and 2) it allows you to gently shake them to release some pods to feed the tank. (I would do this only to do some live food feeding, I know that a fuge would send some into the tank but for those wanting to just "knock" some off for a feeding this might be helpful)

Pictures. One of the mods should be able to do this for me, sorry I wasn't able to earlier.

It did make putting it together more enjoyable, but thats just an opinion. (Side note to those not familiar with reefs who happen to be reading this alcohol and reefs do not mix well!)

+1 Biff, unless you are adjusting something, other than that good friends dont let other friends drink and reef!

Nope, they can lay flat, stand up, be suspended. As long as the pods get access to them there isnt much more of a requirement. On a side note I'm not sure how many to actually use, I wanted to run 4 for my 75 but that might be overkill or just enough or even to little. I havn't seen much in the way of results obviously but will let people know how the population grows based on what i see at night.

Again this isn't my idea, these things have been around for a bit now, I just wanted to bring it to our forums and share with our members from one of us.

what do these do? cant you just have pods in your chaeto? I've seen people talk about these but never knew why they were wanted

Why pods are wanted?

They're teeny little detrivores and are free fish food.
Also a sign of a healthy tank. :)

Not wanted but why build this when they can just live in the LR in the sump. Dont mean to hijack the thread. Looks interesting.
