Ribbed pool hose should work for the overflow, assuming you have the proper fit.
Pressure is not an issue with the overflow line since it is just powered by gravity. The main issue is that it needs to be able to keep up with the volume of the return pump.
Just make sure you get a hose that has a long service life and does not crack at the ribs.
If you want to use PVC for your overflow, design a path with the least number of turns, and avoid tight angles. Avoid completely horizontal runs - angle them down.
