What is it?

Wondering what this big thing on one of my zoas. This particular one isn't dong well. In fact, I think it's dying but this thing has been on it for a while

I believe that's just sand that was settling onto it as I have some on my green one that sits on the sand floor. I can use a baster and blow some of it off but don't get it all. I'd consider the dip though if there's a possibility of helping it. What should I get?

I had a Zoas that looked exactly like that once and they slowly decayed and died. I thought for sure it was Zoa pox but that wasn't the cause. They were too high under the light! I had them about 6 or 7 inches a 150 watt Mh and they just melted. I got some pink zoas recently and I keep them on the sand they are spreading nicely.

Keep in mind there are deep water and lagoon Zoas. The darker blues do not need so much light. In either case start them out as low as can be on the sand and probably put a screen over the zoa to limit light.

It's definitely not from too much light. I only have a 216 watt T5. I don't think there is anywhere in the tank for me to set them that they would be getting too much light.

+1 Everybody.

Did you just purchase that rock?
Did you do something to disturb the zoas and paly just before snapping the photo?
Did you just turn the lights on moments before snapping the photo?

If it's not a brand new rock, you didn't do anything to disturb them, and the lights have been on for more than 10 minutes I would definitely do a dip.

The big one is a green button polyp. It should have green tentacles surrounding it so it can catch food...but they're sunken into the body.

If I were you I would not use the word "definitely". Drs Foster Smith recommend a screen over the coral to limit light at first because even on the sand a coral may be getting too much light.
Strongly recommend you read this.

PRC - That's how it looks all the time. When I took that picture, light had been on for about four hours. The button, I have never seen it fully open. It always opens to where you see it now and that's it. Never completely. As for the zoa, I never see more than a couple of the little polyps open. I'm going to the store today to see if they have anything I can use.

Ok, how do I do this? It says it takes a teaspoon per 50 gallons but I'm not putting it in the tank so do I just put a drop or two into a cup or something, mix it up and dip the coral in it for a few minutes then rinse in fresh water and put it back in the tank?
