what can they be?

So I have had these two fish in my tank for about 8 months now. I bought them from my favorite local fish store who I am good friends with ( usually 20% discounts :grin:)... When I purchased them the store owner wasn't 100% positive what they were but thought they were some kind of Australian squarel or bigeye.... So I have no idea what they are .. anyone know?

They're gorgeous but I have no idea what they are. Try sending the pic to wet web media, they should be able to tell you! Out of curiosity, how long have you had them and how big are they? Have they grown a lot during the time you've had them? The reason I ask is that their shape looks most similar to a grouper to me.

They got big mouths too (in relation to total body size), so it is an indication that these fish are predator fish - perhaps still in the juvenile stage.

I have had them for 8 months to a year.. they are about 5 maybe 6 inches.. they have grown about an inch and they may be breeding cause one got real fat for a month or two and then one day it shrank back to size... Never saw eggs but Its a fowlr tank so if there were they were consumed

I found this post on Reef Builders and the picture looks like your fish. Not sure if its the same species, or just how a couple of juvenile species look, but I do believe your fish are a type of Grunt. They're gonna get very big!

I figured it out a few weeks ago. They are French grunts.
