Last night I made 5 gallons of salt water. This morning I checked on my hydrometer where I was sitting and it read 1.018. I don't understand why my salinity is so low? The proper mixture is half a scoop per gallon. I used two and a half scoops.

It's not exact, the amount of salt used will differ for everyone. For me to make 10 gallons of saltwater I usually use 8 half cup scoops.

For mixes I use one pint glass per 5 gal works good for me. And around here I pay 50Cents a gal for rodi and then 1.00 gallon for rodi salt water. Find it as an excuse to go to LFS every two weeks until I stumble upon a cheap rodi unit. I perform 10% changes once a week, top off everyday.
