You all have a LOT more knowledge on this than I do, so could someone tell me if I could run a skimmer in the following way:
overflow tube coming down to a "T" (both sides with valves) with one going into the 1st chamber of the sump\refugium, the 2nd going into the skimmer (thus eliminating the need for a pump) with the discharge going into the 1st chamber as well. it would then run through the refugium, and to the return pump\line.
thanks

Think your gonna need a pump going into the skimmer. The pump is what causes the bubbles that the create the scum. Can see it working without one.

From the owner's manual:
"There is no needle-wheel or venturi adapter providing the air injection – it is simply the downward force of the spray that generates foam."

Not exactly sure on your set up, but don't think it would work that way. You would need to measure the GPH of that water going into your Skimmer from the overflow. Measure it against the pump GPH you are replacing. If it is less than the pump out put then the Skimmer will not work properly, if at all.

And that's why the inexperienced ask the experienced.
Thanks

Here's what AquaC had to say:
"Thanks for the message, I can help you out. Unfortunately, a gravity feed from the tank isn't going to supply enough pressure, which is important with our skimmers. Our recommended pumps have a good combination of pressure and flow that is needed to properly run the EV-120. Pumps with similar pressure/flow ratings can be used as well."
