I am a sucky coral keeper I guess. I thought Xenia was supposed to be like a weed...well not in my tank. I've had it for 6 months...been doing very well. Growing....opening up everyday....fun to watch. Monday it was gorgeous. Tuesday one of the two stocks was almost gone and the head of the Xenia had attached to another rock. I didn't think much of it...I figured that's how it travelled to other rocks. Then Wednesday all dead...little chunks remaining. :frustrat: All my water readings are perfect...all other corals and fish are happy as can be. The only thing new I've added is a clam and a baby cleaner shrimp. Do you think the cleaner shrimp could've been eating it at night? My other cleaner shrimp never did. I do have a butterfly fish--but he's never even looked at any of my corals. I want to try to figure this out because I'd like to get another Xenia. Irrititating!!! :frustrat:

+2 Smitty
There is no in between with xenia. Its either going to become a problem and take the tank over.Or its going to die.:dunno:
But like you said to.You have a butterfly fish in the tank.So that IS something to consider.

i use to have xenia comming out my ass but then i ripped almost all of it out of the tank but now it is comming back. be glad yours is gone. it took up over half of my 75. it is shuch a pain when it starts to take off

I'm sorry about your coral loss. I have a little frag of orange bam bam zoas that has been closed for a couple of weeks. Its such a small thing, but I'm really bummed that I might be losing it. I guess the upside is that now you have an empty space to put a NEW coral!

That's keeping the tank 1/2 full! :) Thanks for that!!!

lol I have TRIED to have Xenia grow in my tank it just wont.....:dunno:
I have probably spend $100 on different frags to just to watch them melt to nothing....

but like the others say it could be a good thing...

IMO.....they can grow out of control very quickly, IN SOME TANKS. :) There are so many different corals to choose from, that I tend to lean towards the most colorful, least complicated corals that I can put in my tank (like zoas!!).

Sorry about your Xenia Ursula. I can't seem to kill mine; it does grow like a weed. I think if it was doing well and growing for 6 months and then bit the dust, then something got to it or something changed in the water conditions. Either way I also agree you are lucky it died as it will become a PITA for you if it grows well in your tank.

I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad I never put any xenia or kenya weeds in any of my tanks. From all the horror stories I've read, it would be easier to eradicate rats from the face of the planet than rid a tank of xenia thats out of control.

There's thousands of much much prettier corals out there. Why bother with xenia? Isn't most of it brown anyway (or shades of brown or gray)?
