Merry Christmas everybody,

So i just arrived home from a week vacation to visit family that couldnt be coming home for xmas(im pretty big on family). while i was gone my dad took care of my tank, feeding, changing the cup in the skimmer and topping it off. I got a bit of a hair algae outbreak tho, other than that everything is good.

As i was looking in the tank to make sure everything was good, i noticed a green thingy in my chalice. i figured it was a piece of my hammer coral that fell off, so i thought nothing of it. i looked in my sump and saw my peppermint shrimp eating a green thing. i honestly have no clue what it was or how to describe it. to me, it looked like a small green caccoon. i tried to get a pic but as soon as i grabbed my camera i couldnt see them anymore. so i searched the tank for any more but cant see any. so im gonna keep looking periodically to see if i can find them and take a pic.

anyone have any clue to what these green things are?
and anyone no how to get rid of hair algae? Phosphate n nitrate both read 0 and i use ro/di water.

I am guessing your dad might have over fed a little while you were gone. I would remove the hair algea by hand and keep up on the water changes.

As for the green things, no clue what so ever.

phosphate and nitrates are reading 0 becuase the algae tends to hide it from the tests. +1 with water changes. Merry christmas!

i did a water change the day b4 i left, and i removed most the algae i could by hand. i dont think it was over feeding cuz i portioned everything for my dad, how i always do it but iunno. should i do a blackout for about a week? what u guys think?

i hope it is a type of macro algae and doesnt become a nuisance, and i have been looking for more and havent seen any, so i think thats ok.

A few days with the lights off wont hurt anything except algae. Its not bright and sunny every day in the wild.

Make sure you do a water change to remove any nutrients the algea releases back into the water, otherwise the algea will grow right back.
