freshwater rock?

over the weekend, I picked up all the 'stuff' that goes along with my 155 gallon bow front tank. This included 4- 5 gallon buckets full of freshwater rock. They are big heavy pieces of rock that look like they belong on the bottom of a river. My husband keeps trying to get me to put them in my salt tank. They are ugly. I think we should build a firepit with them. What do you think?

Build a firepit. Freshwater rocks serve no benefit in a saltwater tank. They usually are dense and have no pore spaces, so they don't provide habitat for beneficial bacteria. They aren't calcium-based, so they don't have any buffering capacity. They just take up space, give algae a great place to grow, and many of them can leach metals into your tank, which can harm inverts.
