It sure does suck. It is pretty normal for tanks under a year old. If you are having really poor results try chemiclean. Its worked every time for me like a charm. Doc turned me on to it. I'm not a big fan of antibiotics but at one point it got bad enough for desperate measures. Freakin wiped it out

Do a large water change(40-60%). Do not fight the macro algae, grow the macro algae.

Yeah,
I've not had any probs on the tank for the last 1 1/2 years. I'm getting the cyano on the sand of all places (some on rocks, but not much).
I've used Chemiclean before......The skimmer goes off for that one, right?
We'll see what happens...

Yeah,Turn the skimmer off before you dose the chemi-clean.
