I would recommend 3 or 6 mila thickness in the black. Rinse in RO/DI water and wrap around a rock, power head, etc. Worked for me in about 2.5 days for hair algae.
You can also get small sheets/rolls at Home Depot.
Since this would in effect be blacking out all light from the algae I would assume it would be better for your tanking than comletely blacking out the tank

Of course, but I have noticed that if you overturn a rock the coralline on the underside does not die but then coralline is different then red and green algae. Marine biologists have found coralline growing at 600 feet where there is no light and can't explain it.
