You can use that, but you have to be good about cleaning it -- once a week or so. Or else canister filters can create high nitrate levels.
A better idea for a small tank like that is just to run it with no filtration and keep up with your water changes. On my 10 gallon tank, I don't use any filtration. I just do 30% water changes once a week. You could also look into an HOB refugium. I think that will help more than a filter will.
