from what I understand they are pretty self sustaining. water changes can be counter productive on picos. nutrient levels are really low and you could mess things up really bad with how small the overall water mass is. but that is just from a small bit i read on reef central a while back. I would definitely want to do some more research before I started one up.

There are some fish that would do well in a pico... Saw one at my LFS today, in fact!

I kind of like the first tank better since it's glass...but either way. I agree that having everyone start with the same equipment would be ideal; plus, since we'd all be buying the same set-up maybe we could convince a retailer like BRS to hook-up a group buy discount...if they can order from the same/a similar manufacturer of course.
