Edgy Fluval and Frag Tank

Amba

Ol' Salty
I haven't been on LR in a few weeks, and I have not made any changes to my tanks in quite a while. My big tank build is put on hold due to some changing life circumstances, but I did do a couple of neat projects, so I figured I would share.

Fluval Edge:

I went ahead and ordered some LED MR bulbs from RapidLED and replaced the stock halogen that come with the fluval. I exchanged the substrate for some black sand, and I got 8 pounds of reefsaver rock from BRS. The tank is cycling now, and I think it looks fantastic. I have two spare Koralia powerheads but I may take the plunge and buy one MP10 and use that.

I threw in a picture of a really nice plate coral that's in my main display tank.

The second project that I just finished is a 10G frag tank. I figured it would be a good way to make a bit of money back, and to spread some of my stuff into my other tanks. I made stairs out of egg crate and secured them with zipties. I have two koralia powerheads attached to the back glass. I got a coralife PC fixture on there, the same model as my display tank. I'm also running a marineland canister filter just to help move water + add volume + place to put chemipure.

Neither of these are super far along yet, but I think the fluval nano is going to be really neat. Those LED are awesome, I did mod them a bit, added spray acrylic to the LED themselves and I sealed the bulbs more with some of my sisters clear nail polish. More to come.

I was wondering where the heck you been! Lol that frag tank looks great and so does the fluval edge! Love the plate coral..very jealous Haha

My girlfriend surprised me for my birthday and got me 100 ceramic plugs, a lot of glue, and some new pieces. I spent about two hours fragging some of my old pieces to start stocking my frag tank. My display is OVERCROWDED and I have a lot of stuff starting to grow on each other. I fragged some fuzzy shrooms, some purple/red shrooms and an unidentified shroom. I also cut some polyps and clipped back my xenia. Here are just a couple pictures. I have about 25 more frags sitting in the egg crate I mounted in my sump (because I frag stuff in a bin sitting next to my sump, I keep the mother colonies in the sump while fragging to minimize exposure to air).

I used gel not the liquid kind, and I dry the slime off before gluing them. They stay on nicely this way. :)

I really like the levels in the frag tank, that seems like a fantastic way to provide different amounts of light. Pretty much all of the frag tanks I've seen are just the one level shallow tanks.

That frag tank looks great!

And congrats on the fluval edge.
Mine was so-so with the stock lighting and then my attempt at upgrading the lighting with a couple 13 CF bulbs, but now that I have the nanotuners led it's just amazing! I'm shocked at how well the tank is doing with softies, lps and even some easy sps like purple monti. Chris left nanotuners to work for JBJ, so now JBJ is selling the "Unibody LED" that is almost identical, and the nanotuners website seems to be defunct.

Thanks Dennis, I really love the fluval. RapidLed is really awesome too, I love the bulbs, they put out a TON of light. I'm going to stock it with only frags I get for free, I want it to be my, "Free Corals" tank.

Well my cycle is done, so I'm ready to stock my fluval from my frag tank. I have a lot of stuff to put in there. I also picked up an R2 Moonlight (I think Dennis gave me the idea), it mounts perfectly on the stock stand and provides a good amount of light. Here's a couple pictures. I'm waiting for the perfect fish to get, I don't want to just stick a normal goby in there. I was thinking one of those yellow and blue spotted helfrichi firefish but I'm not sure. Any ideas are welcome!

Amba, don't expect those led bulbs to last very long at all. The saltwater and moisture us a killer. Been there, done that. :(
