What Does Carbon do?

I just put a carbon in my tank and wondered what it does. Does it just absorb color and toxins from the water?

And how do I clean it? Do I just rinse it off with tap water? How often does it have to be replaced?

Carbon is very porous and absorbs a lot of nasties in the water, including odor. It will become used up and you'll have to buy more.

Chemi-pure is a nice carbon product. I'm planning on getting some today actually.

ive been looking at putting carbon in my tank. From everything I have heard it is an excellent way to make water extremely clear.

The article Cathic posted says it is greaet for removing negative chemicals. Which seems to make sense :)
