at the risk of asking a stupid question... can you overskim? why are you forced to sell it if its too big? Reason I ask is I have a big skimmer laying around that I was going to use on a smaller tank (30gal) until I find a cheap used HOB or something.

It was actually under skimming. It was too big and I could never get it dialed in. No skim in the cup for weeks.
