if the sand is less than 1in deep than you can mix it all you want and it is not going to cause problems as if it were 2in or more if you have a deep sand bed be very carefull when adding water back into the tank. i always put my rock in first than dump the water over the rocks and is is just like useing a plate or bowl to keep from stiring up things to bad.

You could always pump the water back in with a pump hooked up to a hose and aim the hose at a rock. That's what I do when I've had to do a major major major water change. Kept me from stirring up the sand too much.
