Temps climbing, what can I do?

Grr..I checked my water to make sure the salinity was OK(had been sitting about 2 days in the garage)..it was 1.018! So I added more salt(I had already mixed it correctly 1/2 cup to 1 gallon). Checked it today, all the salt is sitting at the bottom. It's over 100 degrees in my garage so I don't need a warmer..I've been agitating it every hour just about, but it still won't fully dissolve.

Any advice? I ordered more powerheads but they haven't arrived yet, otherwise I'd have one I could dedicate to my garbage can.

The water temp is 90 degrees. Anyone know the conversion for specific gravity for that temp? I know it should be different but I don't know by how much.

Well, I can't find a table with temperatures that high. But I did find this which indicates at 85 F, what you see as 1.025 is actually 1.0282... I could calculate the value at 90, but I don't wanna. So, instead, I'll just extrapolate based on the pattern I see. As you go across (increase the temp), the sp. grav. changes by 0.0001 then 0.0002, then 0.0001... the pattern keeps repeating. SO at 90F, following that pattern, if your reading says 1.025 sp grav, then your actual sp grav at 90 is 1.0289.

That was probably confusing to anyone that doesn't think in the twisty loops I do. The answer is, your actual specific gravity at 90F is 1.0219 :). So a bit on the low side, but once you get the extra salt dissolved should be good.

Back to your question about a top to keep your little buddies in the tank while allowing it breathe... I made a cover using plastic bird netting and screen door framing. I got all the stuff to do it from HD/Lowes. If your interested let me know I think I have some links on how to make it saved on my other computer.

a buddy of mine has told me about a couple times when his ac in his house quit, and his tank temps started climbing, he told me that he would put a sealed freezie pack in his sump to cool the tank off...

I've never seen it, i've never done it, I'm just relaying the story i was told...

as for mixing, i have an extra pump that i'm not using on my tank so it stays in the batching vessel(the garbage can where i mix my new saltwater) and theres a heater in there too, so when i get ready to mix up new water for a changeout, i fill the batching vessel, turn on the pump and the heater, dump in 10 cups of salt mix, and let it run over night, when i get up the next morining, i check my SG, add salt mix as needed, and i'm ready.

The pump i have is a 500gph unit, just suctioncupped to the bottom of the trashcan, on its side, so that the water is spinning round and round.. this mixes the salt, and keeps the water moving by the heater...

my question is this, my buddy, (the same one that told me about the freezie packs) also told me that once the salt is mixed, but not in the tank, that it has sort of a shelf life, and that it should either be used or dumped within 3-4 days... anyone ever heard of this? anyone keep thier water mixed for longer? if so, what are you using, and for how long, and how are you storing it?

Temps went back to normal about a day or so after I changed the lid.

I'm using instant ocean. And it is STILL not fully mixed. I put a powerhead in there a day or so ago too..it's been running non stop and I have been agitating it by hand every few hours too..water temp in there is 90+...Guess I'm just going to keep on waiting.

My newest question is: I got my modded pumps in today! I added them in the tank and it doesn't matter what direction/angle I put them at it will kick up a TON of sand. If I leave it in that area I will continue to kick it up until it blows all the way to the glass. I pointed them straight at the center of my rock wall, coming from the front on both sides, the jets cross eachother in the middle before they hit the rock.

It's the best I was able to get, but it STILL kicks up a TON of sand. Any advice?

Damnit, my tank's cycled. I modded my skimmer...I have all my live rock..I have plenty of flow...and some damn salt not disolving is holding me back! Sigh, lol.

you know when i mix mine up, there is a little that never fully desolves that settles in the bottom of my batching vessel, i dont worrie about it, i measure the water SG and if its what i need it to be i just suck all but the last inch or 2 of water out, and then that last little bit gets dumped outside...

Mount the powerhead lower and have it point a bit upward toward the surface of the water. My K5 (1650gph) can blow way across the entire tank and kick up sand if I don't do it that way.

At some point I think you reach a point where you say, "I don't want a bigger tank! This one's too much to care for!" However I don't know when that point comes? I haven't reach it yet. :D
