on the overflow pipe draining water from your display tank to your sump do you need a sock filter???

No you don't need it if you dont want to. I took mine out and just let the water drain down to the sump. I think its better if there are no filters blocking the flow.

No,I don't have socks on my drains.I do have them underwater to muffle the splashing noise though.

I don't use filter socks. If you want to, you can use them to trap particles before they go in the sump, but I don't.
If you are using a skimmer in your sump it will remove what the bag will remove and completely remove it from the water whereas the bag will just hold it in the water and that is not removal. If you use a bag it really needs to be cleaned daily or the contents are going to start breaking down in the bag and therefore bacteria will turn your bag into a bacteriological filter to use these nutrients. There are good reasons to not want this to happen.
