SPS help

This is my reef club....
I will begin setting up the new 165 this weekend.:bounce: This has got me very excited about the coral selections. The tank lighting will be metal halide
800W14K/ 260W pc. Any other specs you need and I will try to get them for you.

First has anyone ordered the frag packs from the online dealers?
You guys know I don't have a reef club to swap frags with. They seem to be great value for the person just starting an SPS mostly tank.
What venders would you suggest?

What are some of the most colorful SPS corals??

I can see why you like them. I like the capricornis. To many sps that I like.
Are any of the frag packs worth the money?

Look around for local clubs and swaps. After you get cheaper corals and grow them out you can frag them and sell them to other members.

i would go and buy just one SPS coral and see how it goes in your tank before dropping the major cash on a frag pack

I agree.Let the tank mature 6 months or so before you drop a load of cash on a frag pack.SPS are just to moody in a new system.
As for weather the frag packs are worth it or not,I have no idea.I've never bought one off the net.But I'd say that they would be fine.

Have had sucess with the easier LPS in my current reef. I will be including them on this project. They will be my "lab rats" haha. Thanks for the great help.
So your all saying calm down and set up the tank first.!!! lol

Yep,thats pretty much what were sayin:mrgreen:

If you are looking for nice, colorful SPS, I would suggest passing on the frag packs. I have ordered frag packs from 3 or 4 different online vendors, and for SPS, they always seem to contain plain old brown acros. A pack of 20 brown acro frags just isn't that exciting. If you want nice pieces, I suggest ordering them individually, and from sites that show the picture of the actual coral.

fragfarmer.com has some really spectacular stuff, alas I have never bought from them or any online retailer, actually. I'd start with one or 2 montipora frags, then go from there. My orange and green monti caps have doubled in size from 1 3/4" to over 3" since april under 250w 15k halides, also a pavona which has grown 5/8" taller since april. I didn't have any luck with the 2 colonies I tried, one a pink birds nest and the other a purple monti encrusting, both bleached within 4 weeks. The little frags have been very successful, and my tank was only 5 months old when I added them.
