could i set up a tank with sponges and other filter feeders and not need to have a protien skimmer

no you cant.. a protein skimmer is used to break down organics before they decompose therefore lightening the load on the biological filter in the tank whish is your liverock..

Depends on the size of the tank I ran a 12 gallon for a year wuth just live rock and water changes and filter media.

if its 20 to 25 gal or under yes you can just have to keep up on waterchanges.. sorry didnt see the 10 gal reef thought he was talking about the 55..:D

You can run any size tank without a skimmer, you just cannot skip or skimp on the water changes.
