Purple up?

I never tested for magnesium. Could this be why mine doesn't grow? My calcium and alk are good.

I finally broke down and bought a test kit for magnesium. From what I've read, its importances is up there with calcium and akalinity.Did you know that ocean contains more magnesium than calcium?No...me neither til recently.

You don't have to read the article. There's a handy chart half way down that list somethings that are benefited by magnesium.

Doc,Next time you wear socks dude.

Since I've started testing for and dosing magnesium,my coralline has pretty much exploded. Its got brighter colors too and my SPS seems to be doing better.
The next kits I'll be buying are for iodine and strontium.

What test kit do you use?

Piggy,I been using the Kent Calcium/magnesium kit.Its pretty expensive as far as test kits go,but you get 2 tests outta one kit.And you have to run the calcium test to be able to do the magnesium.

After reading this I thought I would go to the LFS and get a test for mag. Noone has it nor did they have an additive for it. I got good coraline growth, but if I'm low maybe I would have even more.

I have used Purple Up in the past but have found that it adds white sediment in my powerheads. Not to mention that cloudiness when you dose! Also I noticed once my coralline starting spreading quicker I couldn't maintain my calcium level reguardless of how much Purple Up I dosed. I prefer Kent Marine turbo calcium. I am able to maintain Ca levels dosing maybe once every 3 weeks and my coralline has covered everything beautifully!

Yep,Growing coralline requires that calium, alkalinity, and magnesium be right.A bit high on all 3 doesnt hurt either.
Just keep those 3 in place, have the right light, and fairly cool water(less than 80 degress) and coralline will actually become a problem.I'm getting tired of scraping it off the from glass.
