Power heads

I have seen some pictures of some tanks lately with one or more of the power heads pointed up to the surface of the water. What is this for and do I need to be doing it?

Oxygen, carbon exchange. Water agitation makes for better exchange. Need to, no.

In this hobby, you dont need to do a lot o fthings, but, this can really help get the right level of oxygen in the tank. I would suggest pointing at least one up to the surface and another somewhere else.

You want to get a ripple on the surface of the water. It helps with gas exchange.

I would say that point the powerhead at the surface is a must
