Do you mean just having it laying in a bag and the water coming out of the skimmer flowing over it? You can, but the GFO won't be very efficient.

basically, yes - there's an outlet port on the skimmer, and a media section just before it that basically forces all the water through it (not allowing it to bypass it), so I was thinking it could be fairly effecient...
