My auto mechanic who is also a Saltwater Aquarium aficionado gave me a very nice piece of Live Rock with Xenia and Mushroom Corals attached to it. I offered him some money for it and he said, "no, this rock was bare a month ago. I just let things spread to it and I won't miss it that much. Take it, make your tank beautiful with it."
What a guy!
He told me that depending on my water quality and how close it is to his water quality, it might take a day or more for it to open up and start pulsing.
I drip acclimated everything he gave me (another plant and some small fragments of other corals) for about an hour and then placed the rock at a high point in the center of the tank.
Some of the branches opened up within minutes and within an hour it was about 90% open. This morning it is 100% and even the mushrooms are looking great!
I can tell I am going to love building this reef tank!
Here's a 1 minute video of the Xenia.
