My cat is terrorizing my fish

My cat sits on the floor in front of the tank watching the fish, then jumps at the glass to pounce at the fish, scaring my poor firefish out of its wits and sends it darting into its cave. This goes on all day long. Now my firefish has developed a white spot on its tail, maybe the first sign of itch? Violet (the firefish) is eating and doing okay otherwise, I'm sure she is just totally stressed from seeing what must look like a giant predator flying at her all the time. Has anyone else run into this problem?

yeah my kitten used to like freaking out my dojo loaches when i had them. If i didnt put the lid on right they would jump out, scaring the hell outta the kitten.

One day i found one all shriveled up on the floor. One of the twins was crying (this was when they were newborns) so i just threw him back in the tank to deal with him later. when i went to fish him out he was swimming just as happy as could be.

After that the kitten was banned from the fish room lol

I feel your pain. My cat used to do that when I had my freshwater tank set up a few years ago. Now I have a reef tank and the same cat as well as several others since I moved in with my GF and her mother also moved in with us from up north and her 2 cats. Now I have to lock the door to the living room and do a sweep every time I leave the room. I wish I had some advice to give about it other than not letting the cat near the tank. But they love it so much.

the only things i can think of are bann the kitty from the room, put the tank a little higher up, or maybe just give him a little splash, he might not be so interested then

I use these to train my cats to stay off the couches. They really work!!! After about a month of them being set up, the cats had learned not to go near the furniture, and I took the sprayers down. It's been nearly a year, and the cats still don't dare go near the couches! You could set one or two up next to where he likes to watch the tank. They use a motion sensor and shoot a puff of air (it just uses a propellant, it doesn't actually spray a chemical or anything) when the motion sensor picks up the cat. It works on dogs too. :) I got them at Petsmart. And the motion sensor heads are re-useable, you just have to buy new refill canisters when they run out. Kinda like squirting the cat with a spray bottle -- but that only works when you are around. These sprayers will train your cat to stay away 24/7.

Cool!! Thanks for the idea! - I think I'll get one :)

I am totally getting a couple of these when we cat-sit my brother's cat. We'll have him for about 6 months starting in July, since he's going through training to become an Army officer. He doesn't want to give up his best friend, but he can't take him to training either. So the cat's coming to big sis's house for the meantime. However, I do not want Milo (the cat) jeopardizing my fishy friends, so those little things might just do the trick!

the only way to fix your cat problem is to introduce the cat
to cyrus.............................

cyrus loves cats, to him they taste like chicken!!!!

my cat taira will sit and watch the fish just swim around and the fish seem to swim up and look at her like wtf is that looking at me. she wont chase them around with her paw or try to attack the glass. just likes to sit and watch. the only problem i have had with taira is her sitting on the canopy but she has gotten out of that. she also likes to watch the yellow lab cichlids i have in a 55 gallon tank upstairs but i think they also like her watching them.
