Mr.D's 8 gallon

Mr.D

Reefing newb
I've been lurking a few weeks now and I'm impressed with what some of you guys have. I'm annoyed that all I can have currently is a tiny tank. :frustrat:
But, I'm thankful to have the opportunity to have what I have. A friend was taking down his 55 gal tank. I already had the Bio-cube I got off of Craigslist over last summer for $50. So I had to jump on it. It sit around with nothing it in for a while.
I was gave a perc and a tomato, but sadly the tomato was in bad condition anyways. So he didn't make it. I did get to save the one perc though and very glad of it. I bought another one, way smaller with the intention of it staying male.

After reading many posts, it seems you guys are interested in lots of pics, and interested in nano tanks. So allow me to introduce my little slice of the ocean:

Pair of percs
BTA
4 hermits
3 nassy snails
3 Astraius snails
1 emerald crab
1 porcelain crab
3 super tiny starfish
patch of green star polyps
1 small brown button polyp

More corals to be added in the future... and a bigger tank.

:sfish::sfish:

Now for the juicy part:
Excuse the quality on the first 2, taken with the cell phone, the rest were done with my dslr! :bounce:

So that's it for now I guess... I just thought I'd show off my meager little tank.

Yesterday I added some saltwater fern. I think when I upgrade the tank, I'm going to buy a whle bunch and create a sort of grassy type are on one side if the tank. What I have in looks really awesome.

lol no none of that stuff.

I don't know this by any other name than a fern. But I do know that it's great for a natural filtration.

I can't think of the actual name...but I want to say its either a shaving bush or maidens hair. Both are good micro algae and pretty.

It's neither actually. I don't really know what it is, but I love how much green comes out.

Came across an write up about my plant:

The Saltwater Fern Plant is a marine plant that can be used as a natural method of filtration and means of Natural Nitrate Reduction in the saltwater aquarium. The Fern Plant absorb nutrients from the water in order to grow, and help lower nitrates and phosphates in the aquarium. The use of the Fern Plant for filtration in a saltwater aquarium, particularly for helping to reduce and control nitrates is not a new concept. However, this is changing because more and more aquarists are looking for a "natural" method of filtration for their aquariums, Fern Plants are drawing lots of attention. Fern Plants not only have the ability to absorb nitrates, but phosphates and other organics as well. In fact, they remove organics so well from the water that they act as a replacement for a protein skimmer. When using Fern Plants you will notice your protein skimmer working less and less all the time. The more the Fern Plants grow, the more they absorb the excess organics in your water, and the skimmer has nothing to remove and becomes obsolete. If you are a naturalist and don't want to have to use chemical additives or compounds to reduce and control nitrates in your aquarium, this is a very effective filtration method to consider. Plant the Fern Plant in your substrate in a well-lit location in either your aquarium or in a refugium. This plant will benefit from the regular addition of trace elements.

Well, I transferred everything to a bigger tank. Only 10 gallons, but it's a small step up. My only concern at this point is temp and I think they should be acclimated... Imma cry if something doesn't make it.
The only reason for the move was to have a wider tank. I think it looks SO MUCH better!

Thanks, and very welcome, sir!

I just think SW fern is too lame. Unless it has another name, I'm going to come up with something myself. lol

Lol I don't know. Maybe... Super cool green stringy plant?
So I woke up this morning, checked the tank... And most everything was doing well. I actually found a new polyp on the other rock. So they are spreading, which is extremely awesome to always see. I also found that the porcelain crab had molted. I at first thought he was a loss, but then seen him in the BTA. The pulsing Xenia looks a little poor. That's my only concern really at this point.
In the ten years I've been doing this, this was my first tank transfer.
