You shouldn't have to worry about shit getting into the tank (depending on how crazy your house gets lol). It's keeping the fish in that you have to worry about. I bought the screen mesh from Bulk Reef Supply and made a screen top for my tank. You want the tank to be able to receive as much oxygen as possible while keeping your inhabitants safe from carpet surfing :)

A lot of aquariums have open tops.
It provides better air exchange at the surface, as well as better evaporation rates to keep the tank cool in warm weather.
However, if you have jumpers then you should consider some sort of mesh top as chichimom suggested.
