Lid or no lid

My tank is topless...if I ever get another jumper I will make a screen top. The main reason is because of the heat exchange. Glass tops hold in heat, they also get very wet which then drys and leaves behind salt....The dreaded salt creep.

Right now my light is on legs it is about 6 inches above the water surface. In the past I hung lights from the ceiling. Depending on your light there can be hanging kits or legs you can get.

I like to go topless....:D I made custom tops with aluminum screen frame and some plasting bird/pest tree netting. I found this in the DIY section. I run 2 cooling fans on my tank with a temp controller and this allows to keep my temp from fluctuating no more than +/- .5 degrees.

Glass tops block light, build up salt, heat up the water, and inhibit gas exchange. It's much better to have a mesh top like Steve's. And like Ted said, lights can go on legs or be hung from the ceiling.
