From what I gather you need like 5 watts / gallon for reef tanks or close to that. Is there a difference between MH watts and LED watts?

Watts are a source of power to the light. LED's don't require a lot of wattage which is why they are more energy efficient. When you are looking for a light you need to look for PAR, light penetration, Kelvins, and Lumens. 10,000 - 20,000K is ideal for reef lighting... There are tons of articles on reef lighting.... but I wouldnt just look at the watts of a light... there is more to it now.

i am curious about something here, how can you know how much PAR an led has when it is not something printed on the packaging, like when you buy something online,PAR is not usualy tested by the manufaturer so it makes it really hard to find a bulb with the PAR readings needed at cirtain depths
