Yes, I have a Fluval 205 on my 29 and it traps waste. Just fill it with live rock and when you do water changes clean the rocks off in your old water.

I hope you have more than that on your tank :D

you could put rock in it or just switch out sponges. You are gonna have to clean the thing weekly so your trates dont go up, so either way will work. On my canister i switch out the sponges. Take it out clean it let it dry for a week then put it back in.
