How soon to check salinity?

I have about 4 or 5 inches on one side that I probably could hang something.

What would be the most inexspensive long term solution.

Then go with a HOB skimmer. The best HOB skimmer out there is the Aqua C Remora Pro. You could even move that to the sump when/if you add a sump, and it would still work fine.

Hey what type of maintenace is required on a HOB skimmer?

On the Aqua C Remora Pro, almost nothing. You just have to clean the pump every couple weeks or so. It's an extremely low maintenance skimmer. Other brands will require different maintenance routines.
