I'm starting to get some color on my rocks but, looking at pictures I can't tell a difference between the two. Can you you tell me what it is on the rocks?

The easiest way is to take a turkey baster and blast the algae with it.If its cyano,it'll come loose.
Just wait till you've had that tank a couple of years.You'll know when your about to have an algae outbreak just by the color of the water in your tank.:mrgreen:

Is it normal for that stuff to grow on snail shells? I just noticed one of my snails is covered in it.

Cool, he looks pretty BA with the coraline on him (I think all the other snails are avoiding him now). I can see a few spots of it on the back of my tank too already.

I'm sure it's not far off, there's a small field of hair algae growing on one of my rocks now.
