Coral Acclimation

Hey,

So my birthday was yesterday and my family got me a gift card to LA and I was planning on using it to get my first corals for my tank. The problem that I am facing is that I have no idea how to properly acclimate a new coral. I just want to make sure I do this right, so if anyone has a guide that they use, tips or anything like that I would be very grateful if they could share it.

Thanks!
Tom

Hi Tom,

You should read the one they have in LA it can be very helpful. I also when to Aquarian's thread for his 36 gallon Bow Front Tank where he has some pictures and he explains how he acclimate his corals. I used this to guide myself to acclimate mine and it worked just fine.

I hope you get some nice corals with that gift card. That was definitely a very good gift from your family.

Happy Birthday! :)

get some air line tubing, like what they use for bubble curtains on freshwater tanks...you can buy it at walmart and usually they come with little valves

when opening the box with the coral, ensure there is no bright light on that will stun them, it's also a good idea to turn the tank lights off...I also usually float them for 20 minutes to get the temp up

setup your coral in a bucket or dish with the water from the bag and start a slow drip with the tubing. To do this you will need to either tape or secure one end of the tubing in the your tank (I use tape sometimes). Start a siphon by sucking on one end of the tubing and use the valve to slow down the drip to around 1-2 drops per second (If you don't have a valve then tie a knot, the tighter the knot the slower the drip) and then place the drip end in the bag/bucket or whatever you placed the coral in

I usually drip my coral anywhere from 1-1.30 hours and while I am dripping, I siphon out water periodically so my container doesn't overflow...after an hour or so, your corals should be ready to transfer to the main tank, however I always check the salinity of my tank and their water to ensure it matches before I do so

now they should be ready to put in your tank, I would place them on the sandbed for a few days so they can get used to your lights...also keep the lights off for several hours after placing them in your tank
