Fishbait the splotches on the sides are part of symptons of fin and tail rot which is technically named columnaris. It is an infection of the cytophagia columnaris bacteria, its most commonly caused by stress but nipping can also induce it.
UWW, did your water temps get higher than normal lately? I would tanke lionfish's advise and watch for aggressiveness. I would hold off on the meds and observe. If it is tank mates Ive got nothing, if its i would cut down on the feeding say half your normal for a month and also double your water changes.
