base rock

Base rock is perfectly safe, and yep. It'll eventually become live.
Base is a lot cheaper than live rock, and this hobby is expensive enough as it is.So might as save some cash for other stuff when you can.

IMO, It's actually nice having some base rock that ISN'T covered in coraline (for a little while anyway) as it adds some depth/color variation to your tanks landscape.

yea, pm me if you want details, its pretty easy, mine is growing corraline like crazy now... and i'm about a week away from putting my next batch into the tank.

Yeah, I've made some already. Still curing in the backyard, and I have plans to make more. Saved lots of $$.

I bought an 8lb white base rock a few months ago. It's now completely indiscernible from the other live rock (unless I flip it over, and you'll see the white still there)

yea, my personal philosophy, when it comes to live and base rock, is buy enough to get through the cycle, then add my own to fill out the rest of the tank...

saves a bunch of $$, you get the shapes and sizes you want, and did i mention that it can save you a bunch of $$?

I'm gonna end up with more than i can use in my DT, so i think i'm gonna put some in the sump just to keep it live, and let some corraline grow on it, and then i think i'm gonna start selling it.. its just too pretty, and so much cheaper that whats at the lfs...

OH YEA, thanks Dcan, i totally forgot all about all the $$ i saved.. hehehehe
you do the math...
i made 130lbs of rock, it cost me roughly $1 per pound, after you figure some in for my time and whatnot....

if i bought the cheapest baserock my LFS has, thats $5 per pound, so i figure i saved something like $500 just on this batch.

now thats what i call some good DIY-conomics!

heheheh
