If they are decent people and want to be able to borrow again, they should pay you for the damage and keep the credit with you in good standing.

That's what they're good for, protecting your lens. Better the cheap uv filter breaks rather than your expensive lens.
But i don't use them, I'll use a lens hood instead.

i agree, better a $15 UV than a $500 lens
they offered to buy a new one but i declined
