Reefing newb
Anthelia
I have just purchased a new pump to pump the water change water into my tank, the pump is 1800 L/H, since my last W/C my anthelia sp has not opened whereas its been a beautiful coral, could this fast filling of the tank had anything to have caused this?

Did you mix up the salt well enough? When you have salt that isn't totally dissolved it can burn your corals temporarily. Usually they kick back in within a few hours though.

Well Solarfall I purchase ready mixed salt water and always test the salinity before putting in my tank, it's really strange because I bought a frag of pachyclav ularia violacea on Tuesday and that hasen't opened, nor has the Eiphyllia, all of the others are open and quite happy.

Even the pre-mixed water from a LFS can cause corals to close up,IF its poured or pumped right on top of them.Mainly because the parameters in the new water is going to be different from the old.

How did you acclimate your new corals?

Floated the containers for 30mins. then gradually changed the water over a period of another 30 mins. and yes the new water was pumped in fairly close to the anthelia not right on top, do you think they will open up, surely they won't die because of that.

It depends on the type of zoanthid. The ugly brown ones spread really quickly! The more colorful ones are slower growing. But compared to other corals, zoanthids in general spread pretty quickly.

Thanks Biff, nice to hear from you, guess you read I introduced a pacific blue tang into my tank without quarantine, very silly I know. I am installing a Vectron UV Steriliser into my return flow do you think they are worth the time, still waiting for my LED's, the volcanic ash has delayed shipping once again. Those small white starfish that are spreading are the a risk to my corals, by the way my heteractis crispa is getting bigger and still looks very healthy, feeding regular in hope that the zooxanthellae may return to it

Yeah I saw! Bummer. The UV sterilizer will help, but it won't eradicate pests. Your best bet is to continue keeping up with water changes and feeding the fish a high quality diet.

The small starfish are probably not harmful. I'm glad your animals are doing well!

Thanks Biff you are inspirational, it's not a dead cert that my blue tang will get the ich is it? it is not scratching and is eating the garlic enriched brine with a passion

No, not at all. Even if it does have ich, it can live a very happy and healthy life, never showing signs or exhibiting symptoms of the parasite.

That's good to hear, how do they get the ich surely it's not through the stress of travelling from the LFS to it's new home? it had been in quarantine for 21 days before it was sent to me. Have you any photo's posted of your tank that I can look at?

No, they get ich from other fish. Ich is a parasite and is transmitted from fish to fish. It can't pop up out of nowhere. You can see pics of my tank in the Tank Showcase forum -- Biff's 90 Gallon... Skip to the last few pages, I've added a few things recently!
