algae and film?

I just got home from work and there is some brown algae starting to grow in on the sand and two of my rocks. There is also like a film on the surface of the water.

Any ideas of what could cause this or is it anything to worry about?

Sounds like diatoms, if so, then that is a natural algae bloom...just keep an eye on your levels, and keep up with the maintenance, give it time and it will eventually go away.

Like smitty said it's just an algae cycle that every new tank goes through. In older tanks it can be a sign of poor water quality. It's normal nothing to worry about.

My new tank just finished with the same part of the cycle. Cleared up seemingly overnight one day. I just changed to some superior lights from my old ones so I am waiting for another outbreak any day now :grumble:

Meanwhile the reef gods gave me flatworms instead. :evil:

they will come when my in-law set up his tank a couple years ago it never had an alage prob after the diatoms until about 6-7 months later then it came with a vengence cyano-hair-and bryopsis all showed up.
