No it's not overkill. The increased water volume will help maintain the water temp. Are you using a glass hood? You can add a fan to blow across the surface of the water to help with the heat.

we have had great success using 20 gallon sumps under our 40 breeder reef setup's....as far as the MH lighting goes Aquarian would be right on that matter...if your using a glass top of any kind remove it and shoot the breeze from a fan across the top of the tank and you should be good to go

With the evaporative cooling you're going to see a lot more evaporation (obviously).
Its the best way to keep your tank cool but just be sure to have lots of top off water handy.

What is your overflow rated for? You want your return pump to be less gph than your overflow.
Yep, I voted wrong, I'm going to use a 70 gallon under my 85 as a dual fuge. Gonna light one half, then the other half for the other 12 hours.
