I have a 90 gallon tank with a sump underneath. I am looking at getting a protein skimmer and would like an in sump one. Is it just placed in the sump and the pump with it is just for it? Or does it hook up to my current pump that pumps the water up to my tank? What are some thimgs to look for when purchasing one?

Well it looks like you have a big chamber there!

You want to look at what you will be wanting to keep in the tank.

I have just bought a deltec sc2060 which is on the way rated for a 1500 litre tank (mine is a 200 litre tank)

but because I want to keep SPS tank, the skimmer will only run up to 600 litres because SPS are very heavy load on the tank!

So thats the first thing you need to look at.

An in sump skimmer just sits directly in the sump. You can plumb them directly into your overflow if you get certain skimmers, but most will pump from your sump and back into your sump.

Oh yea, the other thing you must look at is price!

Generally, the cheaper the skimmer the less quality has been put into it, but there are also some extremely expensive skimmers.

Reef octopus are quite good, but if you are willing to put more money into it you can definitely get a better skimmer. Come back with a budget, tank size, stocking type and then people can give you some quality reccomendations :)

Reef Octopus Extreme 160 Protein Skimmer is the one I am thinking about if it will fit under my cabinet in the sump.

If you can afford it and it will fit, always go bigger :)

you never know when it will come in handy!
