Probably, was strange it was never seen eating, looked ok when removed no sign of disease

On another note, it's hard to see but, that looks like a gorilla crab. They're usually bad crabs to have in a reef tank
That stuff below the sand looks like Cyanobacteria. I get it below my sand too especially when some natural sunlight gets on the tank.
Its not a Gorilla crab,but it is a predator crab of some sort.

Just pick it up from the back of the shell, or if you don't want to, lean an empty (clean) soda bottle with the top cut off where he usually stays, put some food in there, then when he's in, lift up the bottle. Your LFS may take him.
