frag tank question

imdaring

love my reef
OK I will be starting a frag tank when I get the new system set up I have a 40 gal tank that is 17 1/2 deep My lighting that I have are 4 110watt T12 VHO do you think that will be OK or should I look for a MH

well, thats a little over 10 watts per gallon, so if you have good bulbs(the right spectrums and not too old) then i would think you should have enough...

It depends on what type of frags you plan on growing out. If shrooms, zoa's, softies, etc, than your fine and won't even need an elevated frag rack for them. If you want to do LPS, just keep them higher in the tank on a frag rack. I have never seen or heard of anyone "growing out" SPS frags under VHO lighting. They may survive, but VHO's don't have the PAR output for SPS to thrive.

As far as the watts/gal..forget it. It's useless in a reef tank environment. If it had any relevance, you could just do 4 100w incandescent light bulbs for 10w/gal. Sounds pretty rediculous, huh. ;)

soon I'm hopeing to start to set up the new system next month so I will start a build thread then Hubby is starting my sump and frag roon this weekend I think it's small but will work for what I want here are the drawings of what we have planned

yes it is but it takes so much LONGER!!! but it is saving us a tun of money the only thing my husband is not going to do on his own is all the taping and mudding of the sheet rock.. thats a sucky job unless you know what you are doing, and with my husband he has been to construction work for about 24 years he started when he was 15 so he's picky and when he tapes its never good enough soo he is going to hire out otherwise we will never get into the house... right now we are living in our garage he built a kitchen, bath, living room and 2 bed rooms but boy its small for 2 adults and 3 kids under the age of 8 plus 2 dogs and a cat and all my tank stuff UGH!!!
